Maker of the Month: Monek Harris
In the town of Powder Springs, Georgia, resides a talented artisan who has been shaping metal and crafting intricate jewelry for more than two decades. Meet Monek Harris, a passionate maker whose journey in the world of jewelry-making has been nothing short of inspiring, and our Maker of the Month for October 2023.
Monek's fascination with jewelry began in 1994 when a friend introduced her to the craft using fishing wire and plastic beads. Little did she know that this humble beginning would ignite a lifelong passion. With determination and a thirst for knowledge, she enrolled in classes, quickly progressing from basic beads to the exquisite world of semi-precious gemstones and the art of metalsmithing. Her gateway to the torch and metalsmithing marked a turning point, leading her to create organic pieces, often born from unplanned mistakes that transform into perfect creations. These accidental masterpieces fuel her creativity, turning each piece into a unique work of art.
What sets Monek apart is her dedication to continuous learning. Despite her years of experience, she eagerly attends classes, always seeking new techniques to enhance her skills. Her expertise includes metal stamping, jewelry soldering, beadwork, and chainmail, showcasing the depth of her craftsmanship. This commitment to learning not only refines her abilities but also inspires her organic and intricate designs.
Under the brand "Black Girl On Fire," Monek sells her creations, a name cleverly inspired by the torch she uses in her work. Her pieces radiate a fiery passion, reflecting the dedication and heart she pours into each creation. Beyond her personal artistic journey, Monek is on a mission to uplift her community through art. In 2021, she founded the Strange Fruit Arts Center, a nonprofit aimed at promoting and supporting African American artists. What began as a solo endeavor has blossomed into a vibrant community with 15 talented artist members.
When asked about her motivation, Monek shares, "Starting from nothing to something often parallels my life." This resilience and determination are not only evident in her art but also in her commitment to empowering others. She envisions her center becoming a hub for artistic expression, offering classes to individuals of all ages, fostering creativity, and nurturing the next generation of artists.
Monek says her creative journey has been enriched by the support of Beaducation. She finds inspiration in the featured articles and the works of fellow artists, fueling her passion and pushing her boundaries.
As we celebrate Monek Harris, our Maker of the Month, we are reminded of the transformative power of art and the dedication it takes to turn dreams into reality. Through her jewelry and her nonprofit initiative, Monek continues to inspire, uplift, and empower, leaving a lasting impact on the world of art and the hearts of those she touches.
